  What is Nummular Eczema?

Nummular eczema, also known as nummular dermatitis or discoid eczema, is a skin condition featured by reddish and itchy circular spots. Those rounded patches can be very itchy, dry and/or sometimes open up and discharge fluid.

The origin and Meaning of Nummular

“Nummular”, something coin-shaped, is a derivative of the word “nummus” short for “nummulus” in Latin. It was originally adopted from the Greek “nommos”, used to describe a coin in some parts of southern Italy in the third century. It was later used in medical language as Nummular Dermatitis.

What Causes Nummular Eczema?

Even though the exact reason of Nummular Dermatitis is scientifically unknown, people suffering from allergies, asthma, atopic dermatitis are more likely to get it.

Factors that may have an influence on the development of nummular dermatitis are temperature variations, dry skin, sentitice skin to soap, detergents and some types of clothing. Skin injuries such as skin burns, abrasions, or insect bites may cause nummular eczema along with low blood flow.

What are the symptoms of Nummular Eczema? 

Symptoms may show dry and scaly or oozed circular patches accompanied by skin redness or inflammation. Arms, legs, or other parts of the body can be affected areas. Patients may experience one or several patches at a time. Those spots are red, and they have well-defined edges. The patches can be covered by small scales or yellowish crusts. These patches can last for weeks or months.

How is nummular eczema treated?

Treatments for this skin condition are aimed at healing the lesions, soothing the itching, and reducing the inflammation. 

Follow these useful tips to prevent nummular eczema from getting worse: 

  1. Protect the affected area with moistened dressing from getting injured. It will reduce the inflammation and prevent the area from getting infected.
  2. Refrain from touching, scratching the damaged skin areas to prevent infections.
  3. Moisturize your skin frequently to relieve itch and scaling.
  4. Avoid using soap or any other product that may irritate the skin.

NATURAL REMEDY

In order to minimize skin inflammation caused by Nummular Dermatitis, lavender oil mixed with bath water has an amazing use, as it can heal the patches faster and reduce skin dryness. Just take a lukewarm bath and add six to eight drops of lavender oil after running the water and mix both liquids well. Then, immerse the affected areas of your skin into the solution for about 20 minutes.   

As another natural remedy option, a good elimination diet is also most effective when you also work on improving digestion, gut health, reducing stress to heal the body. Elimination diet is about testing the foods  you might be allergic to. It involves two steps. The first is to remove potential allergenic foods for four to six weeks such as processed foods, wheat, gluten products, peanuts, alcohol beverages, caffeine products, dairy foods, refined sugar, nightshade vegetables, corn, soy, pork, beef and, sausages. The second step is to reintroduce the foods that you eliminated once every three days. For instance, you might try to add a small amount of dairy and notice if there is any symptoms.
